Assimilation
Of all the Ataxx clones I have played, I enjoyed Assimilation most
(with the exception of Dominate,
maybe). The graphics are nicely done, the kind that made Amiga games
great (only the menu, for some reason, is ugly). The AI is beatable.
I didn't mind at all that the toughest of the three settings is
disabled in the shareware version.
Gameplay is shows a few deviations from the original concept. The
board is 8×8 instead of 7×7, you cannot do knight jumps, and there are
traps. Two bombs are hidden on the board, if you set a stone on them,
you will lose it, and the tile becomes an obstacle. I'm usually sceptic
of such add-ons, but I liked the traps. They cause more schadenfreude
when your opponent steps on them than they cause chagrin when you
yourself step on them, and somehow they match the optical theme of the
game well.
The shareware version has ten different levels, which are loaded at
random. The full version has 50, and you can choose from them, but I
have no idea if it's still possible to upgrade.
